Operation Northern Arrows

On 8 Oct 2023, the day after the Hamas invasion into the south of Israel from Gaza, Hezbollah began firing rockets from Lebanon into the north of Israel. Hezbollah’s unprovoked attack ignited a war of attrition during which some 8,000 rockets and drones were launched into Israel from Lebanon. The attacks resulted in death and injury to civilian residents and military personnel, property damage to private homes and farms, and the burning of thousands of acres of land in nature preserves, forests, and farms.

At the beginning of Hezbollah’s war against Israel, the organization had planned and prepared for an invasion into northern Israel, like that committed by Hamas on 7 Oct 2023. However, the planned invasion was thwarted by the Israel Defense Force. (Documentation)

As the conflict in the north escalated and more than 60,000 residents from the northern part of Israel remained evacuated, the Israeli government, on 17 Sep 2024, added to the aims of the existing war in Gaza, the secure return of those residents to their homes and farms in the north. The added priority led to Israel’s denominating situation “Operation Northern Arrows”.  Later that day, thousands of Hezbollah pagers were detonated, signaling the beginning of Israel’s offensive operations in southern Lebanon. During the night of 30 Sep, 2024, the IDF began ground maneuvers in south Lebanon.
